The Health Benefits of Exercise :: Physical Exercise Fitness Health
The first group of people to utilize the benefits of exercise were the Greeks. It was Aristotle a famous philosopher of the time who brought this concept to the people at the time. The word exercise means "Bodily exertion for the sake of developing and maintaining physical fitness." In todayââ¬â¢s world you find people from all walks of life, age and sex exercising in some form or another. Whether it be running in a park or lifting weights in a gym, letââ¬â¢s face its here to stay. There are basically three types of exercise. First we have aerobic meaning with oxygen, this type uses oxygenated blood produced by the heart and lungs to supply the body with energy. This type is long in duration, an example of an exercise would be jogging. Next we have anaerobic meaning without oxygen it uses the stored energy in the muscles only and is short in duration an example would be the 200m hurdles. Finally we come to crosstraining. It encompasses both aerobic and anaerobic styles to make maximum use of all systems this would be accomplished by starting and stopping at different intervals. For example you could go running down a path then stop do push-ups then repeat the cycle again and again. Some of the benefits that can be achieved through exercise are lower blood pressure and an increase in stroke volume. Blood pressure (the force that the blood exerts on the vessel wall). Stroke volume ( the amount of blood that passes through the heart in one beat).By doing this the heart will become more efficient and will be able to recover faster after exercise is over. Remember the heart is a muscle the harder you work it the stronger it becomes. By working the muscles of the body they will naturally become stronger. They will be able to do more work for longer periods of time without fatigue or injury occurring. You will have a greater sense of mental awareness (a clear head). You will feel more attentive about what is gong on around you, as well as feeling less stress from daily problems which brings us back again to less stain on the heart. The benefits to be had by the aging population are unbelievable. People who stay active (exercise) through their life live longer than those who are sedentary (donââ¬â¢t exercise) "Most of the decline we associate with aging is really the result of inactivity.

Nike in Southeast Asia
Abstract Nike is the world leader in the manufacturing of sports wear and gear. So at first, Nike didn't pay attention to the criticism it was receiving because it was coming from a small group of activists, although later on, the social pressure became very high that Nike was forced to take some measures to quiet down the public who wanted to know what was going on. In this paper we will examine the various difficulties Nike faced as they tried to balance both, the company performance and good corporate citizenship. We will also discuss what I would have done if I was in that position.Summary Nike, was founded in 1964 by Phil Knight, Nike's business model was developed by Knight while attending Stanford Business School in the early 1960's. In 1998, Nike was the leader in the sports shoe industry, with annual sales of $9. 5 billion and a 40% share of the American sneaker market. It became a lightning rod for protest when alleged ââ¬Å"sweatshopâ⬠conditions where happening in S outheast Asia. May 1998 is when Phil Knight, the founder and CEO, admitted that ââ¬Å"the Nike product has became synonymous with slave wages, forced overtime, and arbitrary abuse. What people couldnââ¬â¢t understand was how Nike could get associated with deplorable labor practices. The strategy that Knight developed involved outsourcing all manufacturing to contractors in low wage countries and pouring the companies resources in high profile marketing. They where trying to take the blame off by saying that ââ¬Å"We donââ¬â¢t know the first thing of manufacturing. We are marketers and designers. â⬠They did manage to be marketing a lot by placing the Nike ââ¬Å"swooshâ⬠on the uniforms of athletes such as Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. When manufacturing started it was done in Japan, but as wages rose, they transferred production to Korea and Taiwan. Later on, in 1982 more than 80% of Nike shoes where made in those two countries. But once again as wages went up th ey moved to Southeast Asia, by 1990 most production was based in Indonesia, Vietnam, and China. Young Indonesian woman who were working in Korean-owned plants under contract with Nike started at 15 cents an hour. Mandatory overtime was often imposed, and workers with experience might make $2 for an 11-hour day.In 1991 Indonesian wage went up from $1. 06 to $1. 24, only two cents above what the government calculated as necessary ââ¬Å"minimum physical needs. â⬠Workers often toiled in crowed, poorly ventilated factories, surrounded by machinery and toxic chemical all because the government was eager to attract foreign investment. Nike's initial response was to deny any responsibility for the practices of its contractors. They said that these were depended contractors from which Nike merely buys shoes from. That the workers are not Nike employees, and that their wages are above legal minimum and the prevailing market rate. When asked about labor strife in some factories supplying Nike, John Woodman, the Company's general manager for Indonesia said ââ¬Å" I donââ¬â¢t know that I need to know. â⬠he defended Nike by saying that yes they are low wages, but they have given jobs to thousands of people who wouldnââ¬â¢t be working otherwise. At the end of the case it says he might have added giving employment to Michael Jordan, whose reported $2 million fee in 1992 was larger than the payroll for that year in Indonesia.I don't agree with the way Nike handled this case, there where other ways of taking care of the situation not just by saying that they didnââ¬â¢t know and trying to wash their hands from the ongoing dilemma. If I was to be in their shoes I would have been looking into what was going on in the factories since they are handling our product. Yes they did save some money but at what cost, their name was tarnished for a while and having people that supposedly didnââ¬â¢t know what was going on didnââ¬â¢t help them at all.One of the fe w things that I would have done was gave the workers some sort of incentive since, I supposedly didnââ¬â¢t know what was going on in the factory. Yes you want to save money but you donââ¬â¢t want to lose your consumers for such a reason like this. That is where ethics comes in and they have to create a meeting and figure out a way to look like the good guys once again by helping solve the problem and prevent it from happening again, like setting up certain laws that their subcontractors should go by.Through reading this case study I became aware that many things go on with a product, behind the consumers eyes that sometimes arenââ¬â¢t very ethical of the company that is selling to the consumer. It also teaches that no matter what, when a company is trying to cut expenses and they push the envelope a little to much a big chaotic scene can happen. Which if not handled right away can lead to the falling of the company that might have taken many years to build up.

Author Background: The name of the author of the article Conversation in the Odyssey is Scott Richardson. Scott Richardson is a professor of classics. He teaches at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint Johns University in Minnesota. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Conversation In The Odyssey By S.Richardson" essay for you Create order He has a B.A in Classics from Harvard University, an M.A from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, from Stanford University. Scott Richardsons educational background is a bachelor from Harvard University in 1978, Master of arts from Stanford University in 1980, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University in 1984. He teaches Latin and Greek and Human Languages and Culture. He is an assistant professor of classics at Saint Johns university and is an associate professor at Saint Johns university. Scott Richardson has interests in writing about the authors Homer, the Greek playwrights, Fyodor Dostoevsky, James Joyce, Dorothy Dunnett, Thomas Pynchon, and the writers of Icelandic sagas. Another work done by Scott Richardson is The Homeric Narrator, a book that he published. He also has written other articles on Homer. He does not have an active twitter or other social media accounts. Scott Richardsons teaching and research interests are Greek and Latin languag e, Greek and Latin literature, European and American literature (especially Scandinavian and British), and narrative theory. Analysis: The thesis statement of the article is the various conversations in the Odyssey. The article is about what is spoken by both parties that is not truly conveyed. The concluding statement that the author makes is that conversation in the Odyssey is a cryptic puzzle, intelligible and rewarding to those who know how to solve it, baffling to those who take it at face value. Summary: One claim that Scott makes is that the bulk of dialogue that is straightforward and honest comes from the mouths of characters who prove in other ways articles: Zeus, Nestor, the servants, and the suitors. The author supports the claim mentioned by stating that Zeus and nestor, the divine and human voices of social and narrative order, stand above the game of saying something in a conversation, and not stating exactly what you mean to say or what you want the person you are having a conversation with understand. Richardson came to that conclusion because a great majority of conversations in the Odyssey featu re indirect address, impolication, hidden, or coded meaning, lying, feigned, ignorance, secrecy, concealment of facts, end expressions of disbelief. In Richardsons article, Conversation in the Odyssey, he makes a second claim. The second claim was that Odysseus, a suspicious man, is the champion of all these kinds of indirection and concealment, the consummate manipulator of language to suit his advantage. He backs up his claim by saying that Nausicaa has the Odyssean instinct when she manipulates her father into giving her mules and a wagon, but she fails to see that Alcinous has seen through her request. This claim is important because in conversation, you have to be good at the game you are trying to play, so that when your conversing, you can mean something other than what you are actually saying without anyone figuring it out. A third claim that Scott Richardson makes in his article is that Penelopes indirect address to the man claiming to be her husband by way of an apparently direct statement to her son and the implication in her bed trick that she has been a faithful wife represent the two most prevalent forms of indirect communication in the Odyssey. Scott Richardson backs up his claim by saying that Penelopes entry in Book 1 marks the first instance of indirect address, which will become almost the norm in conversation with more than two people present . When Penelope berates that bard Phemius for his song about misadventure on the return from Troy, her real targets are the hateful suitors who relish the topic. This claim is important because in conversation, directly telling the other person what you mean is a better way to approach a conversation. A fourth and final claim that Scott Richardson makes is that when the point of ones word is to manipulate the situation to suit ones interests rather than to reveal and communicate, conversation is game and performance. The game of language in the Odyssey can be playful, but the perplex use of speech reflects a treacherous and precarious world in which survival and happiness depends on assuming that appearance is deceiving. Richardson backs up his claim by saying that the straightforwardness is masking a reality that must be deciphered. Those who play the game well listen carefully to what is not stated outright and express what they mean by not actually saying what they mean. This claim is important because when conversing, one can use different words to try to manipulate the other person in the conversation, which makes the conversation tricky to comprehend. Evaluation: I believe that the author of Conversation in the Odyssey, Scott Richardson, did a very good job developing their arguments. I also believe that the author is qualified to write on the subject of the Odyssey because he has a B.A in Classics from Harvard University, an M.A from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, from Stanford University. I also believe that he is qualified to write on the subject of the Odyssey because he has interests in writing about the authors Homer, and the Greek playwrights, and has other work done by Scott Richardson is The Homeric Narrator, a book that he published, along with other articles on Homer, the author of the Odyssey. I think that Scott Richardson left out a little bit about the game that was played during conversations that he was trying to describe. I am convinced of their argument by the end of the article. A passage that was referenced in the article is, Then, when the wheeling seasons brought the fourth year on, one of her women, in on the queens secret, told the truth and we caught her in the act-unweaving her gorgeous web. So she finished it off. Against her will. We forcer her. This passage was described in Scott Richardsons article as a secret that Atena told Telemachus. When I read the passage while reading the Odyssey, I interpreted it the same way. Scott Richardson really stuck to his argument, and ended up convincing me about his argument at the end of the article. I think that Scott Richardson supported his claim well, compared his examples to other situations, he gave in depth explanations, he talked about individual characters.

Citizenship of Organization, Nation and Planet-Rights and Responsibilities It has been rightly said by someone-ââ¬Å"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.â⬠Eternal vigilance for the citizen must take many forms. There are many varied definitions for Citizen, but in this context it can be said that Citizen is the person who represents the country-legally and Citizenship describes the status of belonging somewhere and it implies both rights and responsibilities (Graham, 1991). Organizational citizenship is a concept that all companies wish to have but very few can actually achieve. It is rooted in individual employees view of the company and how they associate themselves with it. Some of the examples of Organizational Citizenship are as follows: Assisting coworkers: An employee can take time from their work to help another to get their job done, as they know its important to the company and to the other employee. We have all potentially had situations where others pitched in to get a job done that had nothing to do with their specific job, outside of wanting to help the company and a fellow worker. Working for the future: So many employees look at what they are going to get right now and do not look far into the future. Those who practice organizational citizenship believe there will be rewards down the road and do not focus on the short-term; rather, they focus on the long-term. This viewpoint also makes them long-term employees, which are desirable to any company. Being a company representative: When some employees leave for the day, the company they represent stays behind them in the office. An organizational citizen represents their company 24/7 and has no problem talking to others about how their company might help them. Thus, it can be said that organizational citizenship is theShow MoreRelated Global Citizen Essay1381 Words à |à 6 Pages Global citizenship has the term that is widely used for different purposes and meanings. Sexually Transmitted Diseases Essay Example For Students
Sexually Transmitted Diseases Essay Syphillis is a bacterial Sexually Transmitted disease. Each year there are over 100,000 cases of syphilis in adults, and over 3,000 babies are born with the disease. Syphillis is almost always passed from person to person through direct contact with a syphilis sore, lesion, or moist rash. It is almost always passed during sex., vaginal, oral, and anal. Moist kisses can pass the disease if one of the people has a lesion on the lips or mouth. A person might be able to contract the disease by touching a sore with his or her bare hand. Pregnant women with the disease can pass it to the babies they are carrying. When a person in infected with syphillis the first stage is marked by the outbreak of a single chancre or sore. The chancre is firm, round, small, and painless. It show up at the spot where the bacteria entered the body. The chancre may last 1-5 weeks and heals on its own. The second stage starts when one or more rashes break out. While the chancre is going away the rashes can app ear. The rashes can look like spots on the palms of the hands and bottom of the feet , a prickly heat rash, small blotches or scales all over the body, a bad case of acne, moist warts in the groin area, slimy white patches in the mouth, sunken dark circles , and pus-filled bumps like chicken pox. The symptoms of the second stage can also include fever, swollen lymph glands, sore throat, patchy hair loss, headaches, weight loss, muscle aches, and tiredness. Sometimes the rashes are so faint they are not noticed. The rashes last 2-6 weeks and clear up on their own. About 25% of untreated people will have a return of second stage symptoms within 12 months. One could overcome the disease only when the first or second stage sores are present. As the rash fades, the disease may slowly begin to attack the nervous system and internal organs, mainly the heart. This happens in about one-third of untreated persons. Most of the time there are no symptoms for this third and latent stage. Sympton s that come later include the lack of muscle movements, paralysis, no longer feeling pain, growing blindness, insanity, personality changes, impotency, shooting pains, blockage or ballooning of the heart blood vessels, tumors or gummas on the skin, bones, liver or other organs, severe pain in the belly, repeated vomiting, damage to knee joints, and deep sores on the soles of feet or toes. Untreated syphilis will kill nearly 20% of those infected by it. A baby born to a mother with the disease or one untreated after her 34th week of pregnancy almost without question infect the baby with syphillis. At or shortly after birth the baby may have skin sores, a very runny nose which is sometimes bloody, slimy patches in the mouth, inflamed limb bones, a swollen liver, and a small head. Untreated babies may become retarded or have seizures. About 12% of infected newborns will die because of the disease. A good way of treating this disease is a shot of benzathine penicillin. This will cure a person who has had the disease for less than a year. If a person has had it longer than 1 year then three shots are required. Correct treatment will destroy syphilis in the body, but will not repair any damage done by the disease. Herpes is a viral STD in which an infection is caused by two different but closely related viruses: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both can easily be caught. They have similar symptoms. And both can occur on different parts of the body. When the infection is on the mouth, it is called oral herpes. When it is on or near the sex organs, it is called genital herpes. Very often there are no symptoms. The most common symptom is a cluster of blistery sores, usually on the vagina, vulva, cervix, penis, buttocks, or anus. Symptoms may last several weeks and go away or may return in weeks, months, or years. The first episode of symptoms of a genital herpes infection is called primary herpes. Symptoms include blisters, o pen sores, pain in the infected area, itching, burning feelings if urine goes over sore, severe swelling may block the urethra. But there are more sever types of symptoms like swollen, tender lymph glands in the groin, throat, and under the arms, fever, chills, headache, general run-down feeling, and an achy, flu-like feeling. The symptoms of later episodes are usually less severe than the first. Many people carry the virus in their bodies but do not have their first episode of symptoms until they are infected another time. Herpes is spread by touching, kissing, and sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral intercourse. It can be passed from one partner to another or from one part of the body to another. Herpes is most contagious when sores are open and weeping until the scabs heal and fall off. Over the course of one year, the chance of getting genital herpes from an infected partner who has no symptoms is 10 percent. Primary herpes usually begins from two to three weeks af ter the virus enters the body. But it may happen earlier. And it may take much longer. The sores usually heal in about two weeks. But the virus stays in the body. It can flare up and cause sores again. Symptoms are more painful and last longer in women or men with illnesses that weaken the immune system like leukemia and HIV. When herpes flares up again, it is called a recurrence or outbreak. No one is sure what causes recurrence. Other infections, stress, surgery, menstruation, sexual intercourse, and skin irritations like sunburn may bring on recurrences. A good diet, enough rest and sleep, and peace of mind may prevent recurrences. Symptoms may be relieved by warm baths or wet tea bags (not herbal). Loose cotton clothes will help prevent chafing. A clinician may prescribe acyclovir, famiciclovir, or valacyclovir. They may speed up the healing of sores and weaken the virus. Using these medicines during outbreaks themselves is called episodic therapy. People who have more than six outbreaks a year may be advised to take small daily doses of acyclovir, famiciclovir, or valacyclovir to help reduce the frequency of recurrences. Daily use of these medicines is called suppressive therapy. At this time there is no cure for herpes. However, in most cases outbreaks become fewer and weaker over the course of a few years. They usually end within five or six years. Most women who have herpes neednt worry. Rarely does a woman with recurrent herpes pass the infection on to her newborn. The greatest danger for the fetus is during delivery if a woman is having her first episode. In some of these cases, contact with herpes sores can lead to severe damage of the nervous system or death. If herpes sores are present when a woman begins labor, a caesarean section can be done to avoid infecting the newborn. Very rarely is a fetus infected earlier in pregnancy. Up to 80 percent of Americans have the most common form of herpes (HSV-1) at some time. It usually appears as oral herpes and is most often spread without sexual contact. More than 45 million Americans have gotten herpes through sexual contact. Half a million new cases are diagnosed every year. Most often genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. Millions do not know they have it because they never had, or noticed, the symptoms. .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 , .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 .postImageUrl , .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 , .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04:hover , .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04:visited , .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04:active { border:0!important; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04:active , .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04 .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u37feeb11409b55aa44009f66f4d50e04:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Debate On Birth Control Essay Trichomonas vaginalis is a member of the eukaryotic STD. T. vaginalis belongs to the Family Trichomonadidae, which includes Trichomonads with three to five anterior flagella. All members of this Family also have pelta located at the anterior margin of their bodies. The Genus Trichomonas encompasses those tube like parasites that have four anterior flagella. There are several Species in this Genus, which infect the tubular organs of various animal hosts. Such Species include vaginalis, tenax, gallinae, muris, foetus, and augusta. None of the members of this Genus form cysts. Trichomonas vaginalis grows best in an anaerobic environment, but will also grow in an aerobic environment. It grows best in an environment with a pH of 5.8 to 6.0, and at a temperature of 34-39oC. Reproduction takes at least five to eight hours to occur. Organisms can be obtained from urine, vaginal, and prostatic secretions. T. vaginalis grows faster and survives longer when E. coli is present. When E. coli is n ot present, T. vaginalis grows well in a totally bacteria-free environment. Such an environment can be obtained by adding a penicillin mixture to the medium. The most definitive diagnostic test for trichomoniasis is creation of a culture. Specimens should be inoculated in a broth medium and incubated at 37oC for a maximum of 5 days. The most commonly used diagnostic tool is the wet smear. Vaginal and penile secretions are placed in a test tube and mixed with 1mL of normal saline. A drop is placed on a glass slide fixed with normal saline, and another drop is placed on a slide fixed with 10% potassium hydroxide. If the slides are fixed immediately, the motility of the organism is maintained. This technique is fast, but it has low sensitivity. Nitrazine paper can also determine the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis by test the pH of the vaginal and penile fluids. T. vaginalis can decompose glucose, maltose, fructose, and galactose, and it produces lactic acid, succinic acid, pyruvic a cid, and carbon dioxide. It does not use pentoses or sugar alcohols. The protist can survive up to 24 hours outside of the body. Trichomonas vaginalis is one of the most common protozoan sexually transmitted diseases. Trichomoniasis, commonly called trich is caused mainly by sexual contact. Since the protozoan can survive several hours outside of the body, the disease may be transmitted through saunas and whirlpools and on toilet seats, damp towels, and bed sheets. Both men and women can be infected with trichomoniasis. Trichomoniasis is has symptoms in about 50% of cases, and the infected individual may be infected for several years before symptoms appear. The female vagina and urogenital tract may be infected, and symptoms may include inflammation and irritation of vaginal tissue. Vaginal secretions may become abnormal in amount, odor, color (yellow-green or gray), consistency, and pH. Pain may occur during one is urinating and while have sex. Strawberry cervix is seen in 2% of cases. The male genitals and urethra may be infected, and although male symptoms are uncommon, white penile discharge and painful ur ination can occur. The best know treatment for Trichomoniasis is oral metronidazole. This drug is normally given doses of three times a day for seven days. However, it may also be given in one dose twice a day for seven days. When both sexual partners are treated, the cure rate is 95%. Approximately 20% of pregnant women are infected with T. vaginalis. During the first trimester of pregnancy, metronidazole should not be used. During this time, amoxicillin or ampicillin are safer drugs to use. It is possible for the disease to be transmitted to the infant during deliveryWords/ Pages : 1,885 / 24

Rock Music Essays - Counterculture Of The 1960s, Crossover
Rock Music In this essay, I'm going to introduce to the reader a topic not touched a lot because of its complexity and its avoidance by conservative adults. This topic is, of course, Rock Music. During one week, I looked for information in the library and at my house, and from the information I gathered and my one knowledge about the topic, I'm going to lead the reader to a better understanding of Rock n' Roll. I chose to do Rock music because I can identify myself with it. Rock music is very complex. In fact "It's stylistic scope is to broad to be encompassed by any single definition" ("Rock Music", Groliers, p.1). The nearest definition suggests a kind of music that represents and speaks for the teenage society. This music is characterized by using a heavy beat. In this essay, I'm going to divide Rock music into four sections: Rock of the 50?s, of the 60?s, of the 70?s and of the 80?s. Within these sections I'm also going to discuss several sub-topics such as famous composers and groups, and characteristics of the music. The first section of this essay is Rock n' Roll of the 1950's, when Rock n' Roll was born. It emerged from rhythm and blues, a music similar to jazz played by blacks. This kind of music started to attract white teenagers. Disc jockey Alan Freed was the one who introduced this music and later gave it the name of Rock n' Roll. Record companies distributed records played by whites but composed by blacks. Whites were frustrated because there weren't any white artists and they didn't want the blacks to be the stars until Bill Haley appeared with his "Rock Around the Clock". In this decade, Elvis Presley introduced a music that was sexual suggestive and outraged dull adults. In time he changed the style of the music by adopting a country and western style and became a national hero. By the end of this decade and the start of the next, Rock n' Roll started to decline because it was formula ridden and it was too sentimental. Teenage audiences transfer red their allegiance to Folk music. In 1963 the renewal of Rock n' Roll came when The Beatles started to play. The Beatles, for some the best rock group ever, were from Liverpool, England. Through the 60's, The Beatles dominated the record industries and with their dominant instrumentation, which included: electric leads, rhythm, and bass guitar, drums and sometimes an electric organ, changed the name of Rock n' Roll to just Rock. During the 1960's many other styles of music arose from Rock like, Motown, Soul music, Jazz-rock , Folk-rock and others. Folk-Rock the most appreciated of this derivations and was first suggested by Bob Dylan. This kind of music brought to folk music a hard beat and amplification; and to Rock, a new poetic style. California was one of the major centers of rock activity and experimentation during the decade. First it was characterize for its surfing music, a very joyful music that reflected the fun people had while surfing. The Beach Boys we re the ones who introduced this kind of music. At the end of the century this happy kind of music changed to a more rebellious style that was designated the name of "hippie music". Groups that played this music were Country Joe and The Mamas and The Papas. Along with this hippie ideas popularity of hallucinogenic drugs produced a psychedelic style of music called Acid Rock. By the end of the 60?s the distinctions between Rock n? Roll and Rock were evident. The early instruments- saxophone, piano, amplified guitar, and drums- had been changed to electric guitar and bass, amplified drums and other electronic devices. Not only did the instruments change but so did the ideas behind the music. For example, "to the lyrics of teenage love and adolescent concerns were added social commentary, glorification of drugs and free-association poetry"("Rock Music", Groliers, p.1). Groups like The Beach Boys, Crew Cuts and The Everly Brothers were replaced by more imaginative, non-descriptive names groups like The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and Holding Company. The Who, the most famous of these groups, were originally from
